Today was/is Friday, January 20th. A Friday like most, the end of the work week. That day when you say “TGIF – Thank Goodness its Friday!” Well depending on whom among my friends you ask, today they might slightly disagree with how greatful they are for today. Between my car woes, my friend Bryan getting in a pretty bad accident, and my friend’s mom’s boyfriend being in the hospital, one might think today was indeed Friday the 13th. Let me share a bit of my day.
As I was driving to work this morning I realized I was hungry and it was necessary for me to make a typical stop by Brueggar’s Bagels. This entails me getting a plain or blueberry bagel with honey walnut creame cheese (yum yum). However, today was different. No, nothing so simple as Bruggar’s being closed or out of a certain bagel or creame cheese. No, something much worse and troublesome happend. You see, as I began to make my turn from Wade Ave. onto Ridge Rd. (to thus turn into Ridgewood Shopping Center) my stirring began to get stiff, I had no power steering. Then my battery light comes on as well as several other lights on my dash, yet the car was still running. I could not make the turn and was thus stuck against the curb blocking a turning lane. Upon hopping out and inspecting I find (to my dismay) my entire idler pulley broken off from its bolt and belts in various lengths of disarray.
Now if I ended the story here it would be sad indeed but we must finish! There happened to be a nice gentleman, a retired NC State Professor who stopped to give me a hand. I was going to call Triple A to lend some assistance but we wanted to get it out of the road. This took some work but we were successful in moving it along. Much to our luck however, we realized there was an auto repair shop in this very same shopping center I was heading towards. I was able to drive the explorer (without power steering, which was a task) through the shopping center parking lot and right up to the bay of the auto service center.
Not quite the ending so let us continue. As this gentleman was driving me into work, I made a comment about the Lord looking out for me today. He looked over at me and asked “Are you a Christian?”
I was a little floored by his straightforward approach but I happily shared: “Yes I am a Christian.”
He looked back and said “We’ll God bless, I guess He had me in the right place too!”
At this moment I felt so relieved to know that God had been looking out for me. I just had to have a little praise party when I finally got some alone time today. You see despite how we view our own circumstance, I know who is in control of my life. Regardless of the money I had to throw out on my car, I know that money really belongs to God, so I’m blessed enough that He gave it to me to have for this very reason. As for my friend Bryan, I know there was a chance he could have been seriously hurt today, but the Lord spared him. So may I close today with a bit of my praise.
Blessed be Your name
When the sun’s shining down on me
When the world’s ‘all as it should be’
Blessed be Your nameBlessed be Your name
On the road marked with suffering
though there’s pain in the offering
Blessed be Your nameEvery blessing You pour out, I’ll
turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say…
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name
