My adopted little sister, Carolyn, graduated from NC State on Friday. No she isn’t my sister nor did my parents adopt her but I met her when she was a freshmen and through a series of events she really became like my little sister. Yes, she annoys me some times but I’ve heard that’s what little siblings are supposed to do!

Friday evening before graduation, her parents were so gracious to take some of us out to dinner at the Cheesecake Factory – which is always fun.

After dinner, we all met up over at the historic Reynolds Coliseum for the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering department graduation. Carolyn received her BS in Mechanical Engineering and I couldn’t be prouder of her!

After my return from Milwaukee on Saturday, I decided what better way to spend a beautiful Sunday afternoon then at the NC State Fair! The Burton and Miller families always go together for the fair and they invited me to tag along. We had an absolute blast! There was lots of good food, good conversation, fun exhibits, and good food . . . did I mention the good food? Of course “good” is a relative term not to be confused with healthy or beneficial for ones body. More photos are available over in the gallery.

Friday afternoon Karoline and I headed to Denver to see my dad for Father’s day. This was Karoline’s first trip to Denver with me and while she’s already met the family it was a good chance for her to see my old stompin’ grounds. I was able to show her where I went to school and all the different spots around the area that are important parts of my heritage.

We made it into town in time to have dinner with my parents on Friday evening and then enjoy a relaxing remainder of the evening on the couch. My brother and sister-in-law (really weird to type that) came home on Saturday afternoon and my brother and I shot air rifles with the girls. I really wish I would’ve snagged a photo of Karoline shooting my Red Rider BB Gun! I did get Lindsy to snap a really good photo of Karoline and me that afternoon.

<wpg2id>14571</wpg2id>

Saturday evening some of the extended family came into town. Here’s a good shot of the family hanging out on the back porch while my dad opened up his present from my brother and me. We got him a nice set of speakers for their computer. He was listening to speakers that came with our original Packard Bell computer in 1995. Needless to say he now loves the bass produced by the sub woofer.

<wpg2id>14554</wpg2id>

In addition to his present from us, my mom surprised him with his Father’s Day & Birthday present on Saturday.

<wpg2id>14567</wpg2id>

He’s been saying that while she goes and walks, he could ride a bike if he had one. Well, she fixed that problem! She got my dad a really cool and rugged bike. I’m waiting for him to take it off some sweet jumps!

Karoline and I had to drive back on Saturday night because I had to be at church at 6:15am on Sunday morning in order to run sound. It was a good time with the family and I’m already looking forward to the next time I get to see them!

<wpg2id>7514</wpg2id>

Two weekends ago I made a trip to home to celebrate the July birthdays with the family. What Todd and Lindsy didn’t know is that my mom had planned a surprise engagement party for them.

My mom invited over some of my brother’s friends who are still in the Denver area over for some homemade ice cream and some really tasty cake.

<wpg2id>7553</wpg2id>

Needless to say we all had a great time and enjoyed celebrating with them. You can check out more photos of their engagment party here.

So as a family there are at least three birthdays in July, my cousin who is now 20, my dad – age 54, and myself who will be 23 on Tuesday. In order to consolidate it all – we always do one big family birthday event. Since it’s the summer time this usually means cookout and that means tons of people to my parents’ house, a stressed out mom trying to be the ultimate hostess, and as always some great food. Now each of the things I’ve mentioned can be good and bad. People can get on your nerves but can be a lot of fun, a stressed out mom can drive you crazy but always leads to a great event, and the good food well it’s usually “good” because of its unhealthy nature. I won’t make you jealous by listing the incredible spread my family put together but it did include some things like roast chicken and homemade ice cream (two flavors).

Todd & Dad working on making the ice cream

The evening also brought along some other cool things. I got to see my brother and his girlfriend, Lindsy, again – haven’t seen them in what seems like months. My good friend and basically lil’ sis’ Carolyn was able to join my family for the evening – which I’m sure was a bit ummm . . . overwhelming. Also, for the first time my brother let me take his 2003 Z06 Corvette (now has new rims) out for a spin. Oh my goodness!!!! The power of that car and the control you have at all times is ridiculous! I mean even in 5th gear you can punch it and it’ll take off! Now you must understand, I drive a 1995 Explorer – it has a bit of get up and go but nothing like the ‘vette. Still, I could never drive a Corvette all the time – too small for me.

Now what would birthdays be without cards and gifts? Well funny thing is that between my cousin, my brother, and myself we always try to out do each other with funny cards. These cards vary in approach – either making fun of someone and their “old” age, calling them ugly (in a nice way of course), or some various other oddity that the writers for Hallmark seem to be able to dream up. Now funny thing is, my cousin started all this several years ago by giving my brother a birthday card and since that time the warfare has continued. This year marked a few things however. For one, both my cousin and I got hit with cards commenting on our age (note we are not “old” by any means – even my father isn’t “old”). Two, my brother took it up a notch and got my cousin the “Old Age Combat Hat”.

Thad sporting the hat

The hat included things like a broken compass, aspirin, hair recolor and repair, and male aphrodisiac “Guaranteed to get your batteries charged”. It should be noted, my cousin is plotting revenge on my brother for his birthday in February.

Well that pretty much sums up the evening – good food, slams about people being “old”, and a lot of laughs. Gotta love family!
